TRAVEL TIPS-- #1 HEADING NORTH ON 1-95: With a trailer your best bet is north to I-64 west (Richmond), then to Charlottesville, there taking US 29 south to Lynchburg. At Amherst you will take US 29 south--do not take US 29 business. After crossing the James river (Monacan bridge) you will exit US 29 south to right. You are about 10 minutes from the Wingate. Follow US 29 south, you will come to an exit for US 501 Business (Campbell Ave), do NOT take this exit, take the next exit US 501 (Candler's Mtn Rd). Take a left a the light (puts you on Route 670), go straight through two stop lights, the Wingate is on your right. #2 HEADING NORTH ON I-95: (south of Greensboro, NC) Take I-85 Business Route north to US 29 north (to Reidsville/Danville). Follow US 29 north at every opportunity (do NOT take 29 Business routes). You will pass the town of Altavista, VA, you are about 30 minutes away from the Wingate. You will begin to run into stoplights on the outskirts of Lynchburg, and as you pass the Lynchburg airport (Springhill Sheraton hotel is on the right), you will exit right onto US 29 north (to Charlottesville). You will see a right exit for "Candler's Mtn Rd", "Liberty U" and "To Rt 670". Take this exit, it cloverleafs around to put you on Rt 670. Make a left onto 670, then right into Wingate. #3 HEADING NORTH ON I-85: (north of Greensboro, NC) Your best route is to go I-85 north to Richmond, then I-95 north to I-64 west (to Charlottesville). At Charlottesville, take US 20 south and proceed per step #1. ***GPS might try to take you US 460 west to Lynchburg. This is not a good route. *** GPS might try to take you US 15 to Clarksville, US 58 to South Boston, US 501 to Lynchburg or possibly US 158 to Yancyville to VA 86 to Danville to US 29. Again, these are NOT good routes for trailers. #4 HEADING NORTH ON I-77: If you are south of Winston-Salem, NC, your best route is I-40 east to Greensboro, NC, then I-85 north Business, then proceed per step #2. #5 HEADING NORTH ON I-77: If you are north of Winston-Salem proceed to I-81 north (towards Roanoke, VA). Past Roanoke (past I-581) take the US 220 Alt exit (Troutville/Cloverdale). This is a tricky exit when northbound on 81, as you need to get to the center lane for the stoplight. Proceed straight through stoplight (signs denote "To Lynchburg". You follow US 220 Alt until it T's into US 460. Turn left 460 east to Lynchburg. Follow US 460, do NOT take any 460 "business" routes. After about 40 minutes you will come to an exit for 460 Business "Timberlake Rd"--do NOT take this exit, bear left. This is the 460 By-pass and the Wingate is off of this route. You will pass US 29 exits (20 south and Business 29 "Wards Rd" and then see an exit marked Candler's Mtn Rd, Liberty University and "To Rt 670" . This is the exit for the Wingate, it will cloverleaf around and put you on Rt 670, then right into the Wingate. *** GPS might try to take you along US 460 at Bluefield, WV, Blacksburg, VA or Christiansburg, VA. Again these are NOT good trailer routes, especially before Roanoke, as here are long grades up and down. #6 HEADING SOUTH ON I-77: If north of Charleston WV, take I-64 east to Charlottesville, then US 29 south to Lynchburg. AT Amherst, take US 29 south, Do NOT take the 29 business route. This is not a good route for trailers. It is okay for cars, but not from about 4 pm to 6 pm and there are a lot of stops. I recommend the by-pass. After crossing the James river (Monacan bridge) you will exit right onto US 29 south, you are about 10 minutes from the Wingate. You will pass a 501 Business exit (Campbell Ave) do NOT take this exit, you want the next one, Candler's Mtn Rd. At the light, make left, which puts you onto Rt 670. Go straight through two stoplights, and the Wingate is on your right. *** GPS may try to run you down US 220 south at CliftonForge or Covington, VA. This route is okay for cars, but less desirable for trailers. This route brings you under I-81 at the Troutville/Cloverdate exit on 220 Alt, and proceed as in step #5. *** GPS might also try to run you down US 250 south at Waynesboro, VA (off I-64) to VA 151 to US 29. This route has a couple of VERY long and steep grades that are hard on trailers. This route is also known for deer at night and early morning hours. #7 HEADING SOUTH ON I-77: If south of Charleston, WV, go to I-81 north (toward Roanoke, VA), past Roanoke take exit to US 220 Alt (Troutville/Cloverdale) and proceed per step #5. #8 HEADING SOUTH ON I-95: South of Washington, DC, proceed to I-64 west, to Charlottesville, then US 29 south, then proceed as in step #1. #8A If you are southwest of DC, getting to I-66 and traveling west to Gainesville, VA, and picking up US 29 south there is an option. #9 HEADING SOUTH ON I-95: north of Washington, DC. Taking the beltway west to I-66 west to Gainesville, VA, then US 29 south is an option, the proceed per step #1. #9A To avoid Philadelphia, Washington, etc, the PA Turnpike to I-81 south is an option. Take I-81 south then I-64 east to Charlottesville, then US 29 south and proceed per step #1. #10 HEADING SOUTH ON I-81: If you are north of Staunton, VA I-81, south to I-64 east (Charlottesville), to US 29 south, then proceed per step #1. #10A An option is to come further south and take VA 130 exit (to Natural Bri\dge) then follow Rt 130. This is a tough route for trailers with lots of grades and switchbacks, but an okay route for cars. After about 50 minutes, you will come to a stoplight intersection at US 29. There is a Sheetz on the right corner. This is the 29 Business Route. Go straight through this light and in about 5 miles you will come to US 29 again, this is the by-pass. Take US 29 south and in about 5 miles you will cross the James river on the Monacan bridge. Proceed per step #1. #11 HEADING SOUTH ON I-81: If you are south of Stauton, VA, I-81 south to US 220 Alt exit (Troutville/Cloverdale), then proceed as in step #5.
